If you completed the full A level in a subject, don't also count an AS in that same subject — only the A level counts.

UCAS Tariff tables

These are the current tariff values, as published by UCAS. The AS level is set at 40% of the full A-level, grade for grade, which is why its ladder looks compressed.

What this calculator can't tell you

Points are not the offer. Many universities — including most of the Russell Group — set entry requirements in grades (for example AAB), not in tariff points. 136 points made up of four modest grades is not the same as AAB, and admissions teams know the difference. Always check the specific course page.

Same-subject AS grades don't stack. If you completed the full A-level, the AS in that subject no longer counts separately.

Scope. This page covers A-levels, AS levels and the EPQ. BTECs, the IB, Scottish Highers and other Level 3 qualifications also carry tariff points but are not covered here — use the official UCAS calculator for those.

Questions students ask about UCAS points

How many UCAS points is an A* at A-level?

An A* at A-level is worth 56 UCAS Tariff points. The full A-level ladder is A* = 56, A = 48, B = 40, C = 32, D = 24 and E = 16.

How many UCAS points do three A-levels give?

Three A-levels give between 48 points (EEE) and 168 points (A*A*A*). Common offers sit in between: AAB is 136 points, ABB is 128, and BBC is 112.

Do AS levels count if I completed the A-level in the same subject?

No. If you carried a subject through to the full A-level, only the A-level counts — you can't add the AS points for that same subject on top. AS points only count for subjects you stopped at AS.

Does an EPQ add UCAS points?

Yes — an Extended Project Qualification carries points from 28 (A*) down to 8 (E). But not every offer counts it: some universities exclude the EPQ from their tariff requirement or use it for a reduced alternative offer, so check the specific course page.

Do GCSEs give UCAS points?

No. GCSEs carry no UCAS Tariff points. They still matter — many courses set GCSE conditions such as grade 4 or above in English and Maths — but they add nothing to a points total.

Do all universities use UCAS points?

No, and this is the caveat that matters most. Many universities — including most of the Russell Group — make offers in specific grades, such as AAB, rather than in points. A points target is only equivalent to a grade offer if the university says so; always check the course's stated entry requirements.
